I chose this book because it was on the Karina Longworth’s, (You Must Remember This podcast) list of great Hollywood memoirs and the kindle edition was only $.99. I vaguely remembered the actress from her tv shows, Moonlighting and Cybill but it was actually the negative reviews on Amazon that convinced me to read the book. Cybill Sheppard was a southern beauty queen turned model turned actress. She was also proudly promiscuous and a believer in nontraditional relationships. The book is a loosely chronological set […]
Why else would you have feet?
Harold Fry is living a life of emotional desolation in small seaside community with his wife Maureen. Harold receives news that a former coworker, Queenie, is dying of cancer and writes her a sympathy note. On his walk to the mailbox, he doesn’t stop. You don’t kill someone you’re indifferent to
Sue Grafton died in December of last year. I was familiar with her books from the gimmicky titles but I had never picked one up. I figured if the titles were dorky then the story would be too. After reading some of the tributes to Grafton and Kinsey Millhone, her protagonist, and decided that this would be a great book to kick off CBR10 with. Grafton’s protagonist is a private investigator in California who is, of course, a former police officer. She is cute, blonde […]
“Of course it’s Loki, it’s always Loki”
Norse Mythology: Oh those crazy Norwegian gods. So similar to Greek/Roman gods but with a lot more cheeky humor. This is a fun book, even if there is nothing about it that resembles any other Neil Gaiman novel. Rather it is a straight retelling of selected myths. I have been binge-watching “The Almighty Johnsons” on Netflix and this is a great companion book. The Almighty Johnsons inhabit a world where the Norse gods are reincarnated with lesser powers in human form. Hijinks ensue. I recommend […]
Stinky gross werewolves.
The Devourers. As I am getting to this review long after the book club discussion, I will be brief. I am not usually a fan of werewolf stories. I find the mythology tedious. Men are beasts, blah blah blah. This version is at least set in somewhere different, India, and rotates around a very strong woman in unfortunate circumstances. There are two primary stories, one told in the present with Alok the professor and one told in the past with Cyra that prostitute/mother. The book […]
A life lived beyond expectations.
A Closed and Common Orbit This is the second novel by Becky Chambers. The first one reads like Serenity fan fiction (in a good way) and I highly recommend it. This book is a little more original in both plot and character development which is a nice change. This book follows the A.I. from the first book as she leaves the ship in a highly illegal android body, a new name, Lovey, and with no memory of who she was before the catastrophe that occurred […]
