Alli Reviews “The Lonely Hearts Hotel”

The Lonely Hearts Hotel by Heather O’Neill

Alli Reviews “The Lonely Hearts Hotel”

I think I might need to start making a list of where I heard about certain books, that way once they are finally available at the e-library I will know why I wanted to read them in the first place. This book overall was fairly good, but it was strange an a bit manipulative and I wonder who told me to read it. “The Lonely Hearts Hotel” is a book set in and around the Great Depression and follows the lives of two orphans in Montreal. Rose and Pierrot are abused by the nuns tasked with caring for them, but […]

Alli Reviews “How to Stop Time”

How to Stop Time by Matt Haig

Alli Reviews “How to Stop Time”

I picked up this book while out and about shopping as I tend to have a bit of a book buying problem. Why is it a problem you may ask, you can never have too many books! Well, that is all well and good if you actually read them and aren’t just purchasing books that sit all sad and lonely on the shelf waiting to be read. I am hoping that being back on the CBR train will help me read all those books and then I can go shopping for more! I love having physical copies of books around, […]

Alli Reviews “Heartburn”

Heartburn by Nora Ephron

January 22, 2018 by allibaba77 Leave a Comment

Alli Reviews “Heartburn”

I was looking for some suggestions on a new book to read and this was on a few list of “must reads” and it was available at the elibrary so I gave it a go. It was a fairly short book, which is one of the only good things I have to say about it. I felt it was lacking depth, interesting characters or much of a plot. I mean, of course, the (semi-autobiographical) plot is: pregnant woman’s husband has an affair. But the rest fell fairly flat with me. Also, it is very dated, there are references to a pregnant […]

Alli Reviews “An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth”

An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth by Chris Hadfield

Alli Reviews “An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth”

Well, here I am again in CBR. After completing a full Cannonball a few years back (on my third attempt), I signed up for CBR but didn’t really participate, although I still read a fair amount of books, I think the writing part provokes my anxiety a bit. Having said that, I am taking a PR diploma and it requires a fair amount of writing so the more practice I can get the better. Plus you all are a fairly tolerant lot, so the judgements about my writing skills should be fairly minimal. So on to the review itself. I […]

It’s a G G G Ghost!

Heart Shaped Box by Joe Hill

It’s a G G G Ghost!

One one hand, I want to finish off some reviews to get myself closer to my goal but on the other hand I have already scraped together two and I don’t really have that much else to say. To compound this problem it has been a while since I read this book so some of the details are fading. I have been writing book reviews for Cannonball Read for like 5 years (crazy!) and it does get hard to come up with new ways to say, it was a decent book and I liked reading it. But at least when […]

It is What it is

Where We Belong by Emily Giffin

December 19, 2014 by allibaba77 Leave a Comment

It is What it is

Lately I have taken a ton of books out from the library and have read very few of them. When I was living in my old town, the library dicked me around, saying that I damaged a book when I hadn’t so I decided to forgo the library and just read what I had (as well as download a ton off amazon). Now that I am in a new city, I have a new library card free of fines and I plan to keep it that way (OK I already have $3 in late fees but who’s counting) Anyways, where […]

Horny?

Horns by Joe Hill

December 19, 2014 by allibaba77 Leave a Comment

Horny?

I read this book when I heard about the movie and I am pretty bummed about how that turned out but at least I did get an enjoyable read out of the deal. I read this book a few months back and I am woefully behind on reviews but I figured I had better get them finished as the end of the year is fast approaching. Horns is the tale of a young man who is assumed by all in his town to have brutally murdered his girlfriend. He awakens one day to discover the titular horns have started to sprout […]

Dark Summit by Nick Heil

September 22, 2014 by allibaba77 Leave a Comment

I have read several books on extreme mountain climbing, maybe one day I will climb one myself, although I have done a lot of hiking I haven’t really felt that drive to do something big and crazy. Although since I am calling it crazy, I am probably not one of the type to actually risk my life to summit. I do enjoy taking a look into the lives of those that do however. Dark Summit is the tale of the 2006 season up on Everest which was fairly treatcherous with 10 people passing away on the mountain, which is more […]
