I follow Ame Dyckman on X (formerly Twitter). I think she is a hoot and a holler and most of her books follow that concept. They might not have her blue hair (or pink or yellow or …) but they do have spark and sizzle. And Campingland (illustrated by James Burks) does have spark and sizzle… and a skunk, a few squirrels, fish, buggies, marshmallows, hot dogs, a beaver and a very interesting way to go camping.
This is a funny and cute way of saying there might not be bugs in Campingland, but there are also no squirrels to toss nuts at you (after all, sharing is caring). The author and illustrator let us know that making really great memories can be messy (and stinky, and a little hard on the ol’ keister) but that is probably the best way to make them. (Read via a free Kindle read which is he only reason I would read it this way.... And maybe not due in physical copy until July.)
Then when you are done with your camping trip, or to read while camping, you can read Team Unihorn and Woolly #1: Attack of the Krill by Alexis Frederick-Frost. A different book from Campingland, it does have the same offbeat and quirky humor. Read via a free book from a publisher on Glose, this silly story is about a bunch of friends and the wild and wooly adventures they get into before, during and after an eclipse.
Bright, colorful, goofy illustrations wrap things up, being both its own character and complimenting the story of when a couple friends, just having a day at the beach, get found by a wooly mammoth frozen in ice. The theme is being a good person, even if you don’t have superhero powers, and everyone can be a superhero if the conditions are right and your friends have your back.
