I debated if I should write a review about three books I only read as samples. Yet, I realized that they are must know about and I do not think they will have any surprises when they finally come out. All were read via online samples of the picture book.
In mid-late July 2024 we will see Seeker of the Truth: Kailash Satyarthi’s Fight to End Child Labor. Srividhya Venkat’s book was the one that had the smallest sample, but I was hooked. Starting as a child, we see how Satyarthi becomes aware of the “have and have nots” and wonders how he can help. The rest of the sample shows things he did and all is wrapped up in some lovely illustrations by Danica da Silva Pereira. They have good details, good coloring and feel as if they are respectful of the serious subject.
Sally Denmead’s book will introduce you to playwright, August Wilson. While notes say Wilson is probably one of the most popular and/or famous playwrights of the US, I have unfortunately never heard of him. But with A Song For August: The Inspiring Life of Playwright August Wilson will take you into his world. The art of Alleanna Harris is filing the page with a lot of just a lot! They are busy, earthy toned, detailed and alive with their subject. I cannot wait for August 2024 to find a final copy and finally finish.
Perhaps one of my favorite books (so far and again, I only sampled) is Love of the Half-Eaten Peach by Lee Wind. Wind wrote the book he needed as a gay Jewish kid growing up (according to his author bio). And not only do you get a book about perfection, the ideas of meditation, study and friendship, you are getting the message of love. The story of the two men within the book was based on history/lore and adapted into something that was lovely and perfect for some amazing illustrations by Jieting Chen. September will find this book on the shelves. Now, it is a bit wordy and weighty as it has a feeling of an adult folklore/mythology, but taking your time is well worth it. The illustrations are classical presented, with the Asian influences flying off the pages. Detailed and colorful, this book is a must have for older kids and adults.
