I ended 2023 with two sequels read in the young adult category and a young early reader that is part of a series but it sounds like you can read in any order. Each one showed a part of my personality.
After I read about Teen Killers/Assassins who are now in love and going on a Bonnie and Clyde-like spree (only, you know they are the “good guys””) I needed a little humor and read book two of the Moonstruck graphic novels. Moonstruck Volume 2: Some Enchanted Evening by Grace Ellis and illustrated by Shae Beagle and Kat Fajardo was that humor.
The big part of the story is the fact that this is a collection of issues six to ten. They are connected, but also feel disjointed and do not flow well all the time. There were several parts either missing or I skipped over (such as the gang finds themselves trapped in a fairy house, but it is not really explained how they get out and the (slight spoiler) prank that was to be pulled is not explained what it was really or why (other than the fraternity and sorority don’t like each other due to the history of their fairy people). But it is a fun romance, friendship, and fantasy story.
The artwork is fun and you need to pay attention as there is a character that has a small role, but seems to be important. They are part comic relief, part knows there is “doom coming” and may/may not like Julie, the main character. The GLBTQ aspect is stronger than ever (to be blunt, I don’t think there is a straight character in the group, which is fine, but extremism either way is sometimes “too much”). The biggest thing I was noticing is I am wondering if the artists are different this time, or went a different way as they did not feel the same as book one. However, it is fine and they are colorful, busy and get the job done.
