“Who wouldn’t want to go off on a grand adventure with a bunch of hot heroes also chosen by the goddess?”
Me bitches. No thank you.
Biceps were nice, but so was not having my guts eaten by an orc.
Cinnamon, whose family grows and sells spices, is partying it up with her best friend Brie, the local cheesemonger. Her village is celebrating because Myva, the local goddess, has chosen the local champion, Priscilla, to go off and be a hero and rid the land of the imminent demon infestation that occurs once every fifteen years. Brie and Cinnamon are celebrating because they hate Priscilla and want to keep living their best lives selling their wares and hanging with their friends. After a few ales, Cinnamon begins the long walk home to her family farm. When she hears someone crying out in pain, she goes to investigate. Lo and behold it’s a really hot dude trapped under some rubble from a landslide. Cinnamon frees him and he, well..he attacks her because he’s a demon. When she fights back, she accidentally frees him from Myva’s spell, which has been keeping all of demon-kind enslaved. Once sobriety sets in, Cinnamon learns that she is now tasked with taking her newly-rescued demon around the country to destroy Myva’s chalices: the tools the goddess uses to wield her power. Along the way, Cinnamon meets other demons, frees them, makes new friends, and learn something about herself along the way.
This is a classic enemies to friends to lovers to sexy magical shenanigans with a healthy dose of family issues, survivor’s guilt, imposter syndrome, and learning to put yourself first. The dialog is fantastic. However, it does not make up for the weak story and boring love interest. Fallon, the demon, is a bit too perfect. Regardless, this is a fun, silly romance with plenty of great one-liners. I will probably read the next in the series (The Mead Mishaps) titled, “That time I got drunk and yeeted a love potion at a werewolf,” at some point in the future. However, there are other fantasy romances I intend to read first.
