The wild world of ramen, fireworks and gunpowder

Both these titles give you an introduction to their wild worlds. Such as the wild world of Ramen. Yes, I said it, that seemingly bland food, has a rich history and not so bland taste really. Especially when you learn all the senses we use to eat, how over the years different cultures added to it to make it as we know it now. And most importantly, we see this in the bright colors and detailed images of Juan Calle. And of course as we learn how the fireworks that were used to scare off the spirits of old Japan become some of the most sought after entertainment. We learn the ins and outs of how packing different minerals could make different sounds, colors, shapes and sizes of the bangs. And of course, how the fireworks and gunpowder would evolve into weapons. All of the series is by Amara, Chin and Calle, but each has its own style and pacing.

I think the ramen story was more historical and informational, but the fireworks one might have the greater appeal. And still thought most people will probably come away with a favorite, I cannot pick mine. I love how the firework was just in its teen-early adulthood years as this country celebrated its first Fourth of July. And how one man’s seemingly simple additions and inventions would make a ramen empire. One man became a Ramen King. And did you know there are museums dedicated to ramen? And shops in the thousands all over Japan? Not to mention how the simplest little thing could make something for fun turn deadly? And all of this done with fun, upbeat text and carefully presented? Nothing is gratuitous but simple, matter of fact, and not “stuffy” nor too technical. The picture book format might turn a few older readers off, but these books work great for the picture book traditional audience up to about second grade (or around aged eight). However, you could adapt it for slightly older children.
