The pharmacy was perfect, and I was only there for the cash. And maybe a new foundation. Eyeliner. Shampoo. Oh, and maybe some chocolate.
The manager nodded at one of the employees, who sprinted off to the cosmetics area.
“Maybelline!” I called. “Warm ivory!”
“Rich alabaster would be better!” she yelled back.― S.A. Sommers, Petty

Farrier folded his arms across his massive chest and leaned against the desk. “We have all these visible heroes. Flying around, running around, leaping over shit. Saving the day from the visible threats. We’re all morally upstanding and all that happy horseshit.”

Oliver Coburn, a.k.a. “Rook” is a brilliant strategist and small-time criminal. In Far Moor City, the balance of good and evil is maintained via various formal agreements between the Heroes League (HL) and the Department of Villains’ Affairs (DoVa). Oliver manages to pull off the occasional petty crime while working toward his official architect’s license. He clocks into a regular nine-to-five job and still manages to pull off his monthly mandated crime quota. Between taunting overconfident lower-tier heroes and whittling down his mandatory hours of practice in his architecture internship, Oliver has no time for relationships. The closest he gets is the occasional chance to support other tier-one villains when they go up against Gladiator, Oliver’s crush and the strongest and most beloved hero in the city. But Gladiator is so far out of his league, both in his abilities and fame, Oliver resigns himself to watch from a distance. So when Gladiator arrives at Oliver’s door while he himself is on death’s door, Oliver does the only thing he can do: he lets him in and proceeds to treat his near fatal poisoning and stab wound. Can the most powerful superhero and one of the least-impressive small-time villains solve the mystery of Gladiator’s attack? Will they inevitably grow closer as Gladiator is forced to rehabilitate under Oliver’s careful watch? Can villains and heroes fall in love?
I ADORED this book. I got this for free and, based on most of the other free romance books I got, my expectations were low. It was sexy, funny, and smart. More than once, I got Cat Sebastian vibes. Sure, it was tropey in places, but it relied on them less often than I had expected. If you are tired of superheroes, this book does a good job of skewering them (gently and lovingly, of course). It is a fast read and is one of my top MM romance books of all time.
