I love this author! Hena Kahn wrote the book Amina’s Voice and its sequel Amina’s Song which are both amazing. This is another amazing book by her. I prefer Amina’s Voice, but I might be a little biased since that was my absolute favorite book when I was 8.
More to the Story by Hena Kahn is described as a Muslim, middle-grade Little Women. I haven’t read Little Women, so I don’t know if this is true, but most people seem to think that it’s quite accurate.
Jameela (nicknamed Jam) Mirza was picked to be a feature editor of her middle school newspaper! This is very exciting for her, not just because it is a great honor for a 7th grader, but it also brings her one step closer to being an award-winning journalist like her late grandfather and making her father proud. But, since the editor-in-chief keeps turning down her topics, she ends up writing about the new kid at school. But how will she make a story out of that? And she needs one that is good enough to win a contest, too.
Jam and her sisters then get bad news. Their father must move to the other side of the world for 6 months, for his job. Jam takes this as another reason she MUST make him proud. But then, one of Jam’s sisters is diagnosed with a deadly illness, and Jam’s world starts going up in flames.
This is a great book! I love the author, as I mentioned before, and the plot is really good too. It has themes of illness, pursuing your ambitions, friendship family, and sisterhood. It is meant for 8-12 year-olds and is overall a great read.
