The problem with finding a new author who is new to the scene and not just new to me is that there’s no backlog to dive into. Suzanne, I hope you’re working on a stack of new stuff STAT! I actually started this series with book two and loved it, this is book one, and book three came out last year and now I have to find it. The Finder series is a lot of fun.
Fergus Ferguson has some serious emotional baggage, but travels light in the physical sense. He flits from planet to ship to job to quest, kind of a freelance bounty hunter (for people and things) who hates to be tied down. He doesn’t like to depend on others, and he doesn’t like people to depend on him. But when the only other passenger in a space cable car is killed, he finds himself working with her family as he completes his own finding mission as well as accidentally starting a war.
Fergus is a fun character, smart and quick on his feet and WAY more melodramatic than he thinks he is. The people he meets in this book’s corner of the galaxy are also well-drawn and interesting, and though there are a lot of Chosen One type coincidences, it all makes sense with the larger story. There’s political intrigue and a scary set of aliens that everyone is terrified of, some clever plots, some danger, and some good religious-culty villains. The writing is sharp, the story feels original, and I can’t wait to read book three.
