No plot, only vibes! Ok, there is a plot here, but the plot is recently divorced single mother trying to give her kid a good life has new neighbors, a father and son who look like demons to her. Very little conflict, quick slide into domesticity, sexy times, fin.
Chace Verity really excels at the low stress, cozy paranormal romance. It’s not a niche I knew I needed until I read Verity’s 2019 release Deal With the Demon. The Demon Next Door is even cozier.
Mollie’s life is definitely not easy at the moment the book opens. Her ex-husband has decided being a husband and father is not for him and taken a powder. Her son Jackson, is generally a good kid, but having trouble adjusting to his father’s departure. Mollie really wants to give her son the perfect 7th birthday party, but the best gift turns out to be the kid who moves in next door. Initially Ty catches Mollie’s eye because he’s running around in the cold in a costume without appropriate cold weather wear. When Mollie goes to talk to Ty’s Dad about it, she discovers Nuit, is most definitely not human. Nuit is a judgement demon, literal minded and archaic in his speech. Only Mollie and Jackson can see the demons’ true appearances.
It’s been hard figuring out what is the proper height I should assume in this realm, but you are more attractive with a narrower gap between us. What I viewed yesterday was already quite pretty, but this difference highlights your best features with such intensity.”
Mollie and Nuit form a bond as their sons become the best of friends. Mollie and Nuit help each other with parenting their boys. With one exception, Nuit does not magically solve Mollie’s problems, but having another person on her team does help Mollie achieve some of the life balance she lost when her husband left.
Chace Verity really is a delight and I’m looking forward to the next instalment in this series, Match With the Demon coming later this month.
