This book has a really fascinating concept, which was, in my opinion, fairly well executed. It takes the concept of an Agatha Christie-style locked room mystery and spins it on its head,
by making our protagonist live through the same day over and over, but in the bodies of different characters, and having to solve the mystery of Evelyn Hardcastle’s death, which will have happened at the end of the evening.
This is a very mild spoiler, that is revealed in the synopsis in Goodreads and at the back of the book, but I’d skip it if you’re planning on reading it.
Our character wakes up lost, confused and alone in the forest, having no idea where or who he is, and finds himself in a very complicated situation. All he knows is the name “Anna” and that a woman was just murdered in these woods and he did nothing to save her.
The story is confusing and non-linear and for most of the book it’s just brilliant. We’re in our main character’s head for the whole of it and we only know as much as he does. It’s fast paced and keeps you guessing, and although the ending was not quite what I was expecting, it didn’t completely ruin the book for me (which bad endings usually do).
I don’t want to spoil it for you, because I think you should go into this as blind as you can go (I wish I hadn’t read the back of the book). But know that I am personally very glad I picked this up, even if it took me a while to get through. This was a solid 3.5 stars.
