How do you decide what to read next on your TBR list?
I wish I had an easy answer. In the summer, I participate in various library bingo games, which help me clear my shelves of books I would otherwise let sit there. I read only Black writers in February and I’m going to try to read only female/femme writers in March. I collect Hard Case Crime novels and make a point to read one a month. Otherwise, it’s wherever the wind (and my library holds) takes me.
You’ve got this intriguing line in one of your reviews: “She wasn’t afraid to confront her creation head on and that’s all one can ask of a writer, even if they don’t like where the book lands.” Do you think an author isn’t necessarily in charge of the story they’re writing or the characters they’re creating?
I think the author is in charge. As far as reading experiences go, I appreciate is when a writer steps outside of the familiar “hero” narrative and creates an engaging, complex story from beginning to end. If you’re writing a noir, have a noir ending. Romance, have a romantic one, etc. Too often, people want to read moody, complex books with conclusive, positive endings. That’s not life. I don’t need an ambiguous ending if the writer is going to be cheeky but most fiction resolves itself in a tidy manner, which has never sat well with me. Be true to your story from the first page to the last.
You mention a writers group in one of your reviews. What do you write? (Besides book reviews – you’re well over a double Cannonball already, congrats!)
I’m trying my hand at fiction. Currently seeking to publish my first book. If you’re an agent or publisher and you’re looking for a mystery novel that explores social issues in present day Manhattan, get at me!
How many times have you participated in CBR? How has it changed your reading?
This is my fourth year and it’s good to read for a good cause! I also appreciate the 250 word minimum for reviews; it makes me consider things more deeply with regards to what I just read.
What was the last new recipe you tried? How did it turn out?
I need a recipe to make ice cubes. I’m the last person you want to ask, haha.
