Black Buck a novel by Mateo Askaripour is the first book I have finished in 2021. There is a small stack I am reading, but I am so glad I set those aside for the weekend and dug into Black Buck. This book got into my head, much in the way capitalism and white supremacy get into your head. Here I am writing this book from the high you get when you just finished reading a page turner and then it is time to do the dishes, finally eat something today, answer those work emails, and go to your great aunts zoom funeral – and you wish you could crawl back inside the book and live there for a while. I am always amazed at that feeling I have after reading a great book. That feeling of experiencing culture shock with reality as your return form the some-where-else of inside the book. One minute, I was standing next to the narrator Darren in his family home, now I am here. I was living in this terrible world full of wonderful people for the last four days, and I want to go back because I am in love and because there is still so much to know and understand. I feel hoodwinked. I feel angry. I feel grateful. Askaripour is a master of deception and a master of sales, and also very skilled at revealing the truth. He will help you look more deeply at your role in our capitalist, white-supremacist society. Reading this book took me a little more than a weekend, but doing the work that this book is asking me to do will take me a lifetime. One thing is for sure, today is deals day, and I am sold.
