That phrase hit me this morning while I was failing to get ready for work in a timely manner- I was listening to this book, brushing my teeth, scrolling through twitter, and BAM. I’m pretty sure I heard that same sentiment expressed several times over while stress-watching the entire certification process on Wednesday night/ Thursday morning after, you know, homegrown terrorists were allowed to run amok in the Capitol. Lies are still flying fast and furious, and it becomes more and more apparent with each passing moment how dangerous disinformation truly is.
I had originally wanted to start this review with this delight:
How humans decide what to do with their arms on a second by second basis, I still have no idea
Nor do I, and I am not Murderbot. Any time I stop to think about what my body is doing at any given moment, it’s all I can think about and I overanalyze myself into infinity. It was REALLY bad when I was still on stage; lose your flow for half a second and end up Ricky Bobby-ing your arms around like you’ve never worn a human suit before. Murderbot has continued to grow, and my love of it has continued to grow as well. Martha Wells has really nailed what it is to “human”, by both giving Murderbot an internal sense of changing self, and by populating the world around it with complex and unique individuals. Murderbot comes full circle in this adventure while attempting to reunite with the crew from All Systems Red. Not too much time has passed, but so very much has changed.
I’m drawn to this universe in the same way that I am drawn to the worlds of Becky Chambers; many different ways to live are presented, respected, and studied without every feeling preachy OR like the author is “checking the boxes”. This has been my favorite of the The Murderbot Diaries; it it keeps moving at this pace I will have to expand my ratings outside of the Five-Star system!
