Bibliophile by Jane Mount is a book about books. As a book lover I was thrilled to get this as a gift. It is a perfect book to start a new Cannonball year with.
Jane Mount has a cool job, she draws book covers for a living. She takes a list of a person’s favorite books and creates a visual representation of their list (designed like the stack of books on the cover of this book). She has a very nice online shop called Ideal Bookshelf, where she sells custom and non custom merchandize with her book cover drawings. Only as I sat down to do this review, did I realize that I had one of her mugs sitting on my desk (novels of the 1800’s to be specific), another perfect gift I had gotten during a previous holiday season!
The book is divided into short sections about different genres of books, famous bookstores around the world, cool libraries around the world, writing spaces of famous writers, book related quizzes, and recommendations from famous book lovers. It is all beautifully illustrated with her drawings of book covers, authors, and locations. And a plus for any pretty book, it has a red ribbon bookmark built in!
I really enjoyed this book and learned a few things I didn’t know. (Did you know that George Bernard Shaw had a rotating writing hut?) I also found a few books to add to my to-read list, as well as several cool book places I would like to visit (when we can safely travel again). My one complaint with this book is that the notes by the drawings are in a very small italic font. I had to read the book with a magnifying glass in hand.
I highly recommend this book for any book lover. Maybe you can gift it to a book lover in your life and make them as happy as I was to get it!
