Well, this was cute. Maybe it wasn’t as robust as I had hoped, but my god, it was cute.
I had heard a few weeks ago that Rainbow Rowell had agreed to release a Manga version of Fangirl…and without any further details, I preordered right away. I didn’t realize it was just “Part 1” and that it would end right when I didn’t want it to. I have no idea how much longer I am going to have to wait to see Levi take Cath on a snowy date. I’m not sure I can take it.
The art in this book is a bit odd — I don’t know a ton about Manga, so maybe this is just how it is, but I haven’t seen it this way in the dozen or so books that I’ve read over the years. Sometimes faces are blank…maybe this is on purpose? Maybe it literally means that someone had a blank expression? It was weird and a little distracting. (Also, tiny complaint: I was annoyed that this book wasn’t backwards like a regular Manga book).
But Levi and Reagan look amazing. Levi is smiley and has floppy hair. Reagan is a boss. Nick looks like an asshat. Simon and Baz look gorgeous. However, I couldn’t get over the fact that Cather and Wren didn’t look that much alike. And their dad looked like a kid, which was a teensy bit distracting.
But so, so cute, and it made me happy. I loved seeing Levi smile everywhere while he talked about Range Management. Totally worth it just for that. Its never a bad thing to be reminded of a story and characters that you love. I will definitely preorder book 2 (and that had better be the end of it! I can’t wait for book 3!!), and I wouldn’t mind reading a few more Manga versions of Rowell’s books. Attachments might be fun.
