I’ve been dreading writing this review because I loved the book so much.
I really don’t think I’m going to say too much about the book or the characters, because I can’t. Well, I could, but I would just end up hating whatever I wrote because I love the book too much and I’m too close to it and words are never enough, I tell you.
Basically, this is a British rom-com in book form. It is actually, legitimately funny. I loved both of the main characters (though we only get POV from one of them), and the emotional stakes felt very real to me. I felt all the agony. All the emotions! While I was reading this. The side characters were great, there was one that about made me die from giggling every time he was on the page. Everything about it felt very British.
I will also admit this book is the reason I finally gave in and started watching RuPaul’s Drag Race (I’m through season five currently) because one of the character’s moms decides she’s going to watch it and holds viewing parties with her also elderly lady friend and her adult son, and his fake boyfriend.
And I’m serious, I really did laugh out loud at this book, which is super rare. Even when I think something is funny I don’t usually stop and laugh with actual noises, but that happened multiple times throughout this book.
I’ve never read any of Alexis Hall’s romance before, though I have For Real downloaded and just have never gotten around to it. I also only got halfway through their Sherlock Holmes pastiche, The Affair of the Mysterious Letter, even though it was super weird and full of tentacle creatures and magic, and seems way far up my alley. One of my plans for early next year is to revisit that one by audio. Anyway long story short, I must now read more from Alexis Hall. This book more than justifies a breakout career and I hope they write 5,000 more books.
