I admit…. I picked up this book because it’s called Things in Jars and I have lately been possessed of a sudden and all-consuming need to replace my haphazard collection of pantry receptacles with matching glass jars. Don’t they just make the kitchen look so organised and me like a whole-food queen of wholesomeness?
Things in Jars has nothing to do with the correct and aesthetically pleasing storage of pantry goods, but it is delicious story telling. It reminds me that reading fiction is a good use of my time, and I should endeavour to spend more of my time with it – rather than defaulting to non-fiction.
This Victorian era detective novel has a dash of romance, a taste of folklore, and a seven-foot housemaid with whiskers. The characters are so real and endearing you’ll want to read the book just to feel like you’re hanging out with them (if not spying like a fly on the wall). Bridie Devine, Ruby Doyle, Valentine Rose and Cora Butter are just some of them, and how can you not love their names?
