CBR11 BINGO: Rainbow Flag
OMG. OMG. OMG. Totally going to fan girl all over this one. I did a quick search and it looks like nobody has reviewed this for CBR yet. A few folks have read and reviewed Alexis Hall’s romances though so the author should be familiar to some. Those of you who are fans of the following series: Gail Carriger’s Parasol Protectorate, Sherry Thomas’ Lady Sherlock and V. E. Schwab’s Shades of Magic….. buckle up! This book is right up your alley! It’s a sexy paranormal alternate universe gender bending Sherlock-y bunch of goodness. SO MUCH FUN.
Former military captain, John Wyndham is wounded in battle and discharged from service. Still adjusting to his new civilian life, he answers an advertisement to share rooms closer to his new job. His new roommate, Sorceress for hire, Ms Shaharazad Haas, is more than he bargained for. When Ms Haas’ old flame, Miss Eirene Viola, enlists her help in a little matter of blackmail, Mr. Wyndham finds himself leading anything but a tranquil civilian life.
Traveling through the strange neighborhoods of Khelathra and the undersea ruins of Ven, Ms. Haas and Mr. Wyndham begin to track down the blackmailer who stands in the way marriage between Miss Viola and her fishmonger fiancee, Miss Cora Beck. Could it be the theater owner or the gossip monger? Perhaps it is the former paramour prince or the jilted vampire?
Hall has created a delightful universe here full of sky pirates, trippy gods, exasperated police officers and terrifying land ladies. It’s a crazy stew of whodunit with a dash of steampunk, a pinch of paranormal and loads of witty banter. Honestly, it was just a joy to read. I suspect that Hall is intending a series here as it seems to be hinted at throughout the book. I certainly hope so! Seriously giddy over this one and grateful that I heard about it from Goodreads.
