It is time once again friends to decide what book we want to tackle as a group. Following a great discussion, if not great reading, for our Fantasy pick, it’s time to head in a new direction, west you might say – and fall into some Non-fiction about the history of Hollywood.
Below you will find our four choices, which cover different times and topics within the broad view of Hollywood’s History. I have stayed away from biographies and memoirs; we’ll tackle those next year.
As was the case last year the voting window will be open for one week, and our choice will be announced on Thursday April 20. As with our last #CannonBookClub meeting, all book discussions will take place on the second Wednesday of the month, so we will be discussing our selection on June 14.

- Down and Dirty Pictures chronicles the rise of independent filmmakers and of the twin engines the Sundance Film Festival and Miramax Films that have powered them. Peter Biskind profiles the people who took the independent movement from obscurity to the Oscars, most notably Sundance founder Robert Redford and Harvey Weinstein, who with his brother, Bob, made Miramax an indie powerhouse. Candid, penetrating and controversial.
Life Moves Pretty Fast: Lessons We Learned from 80s Movies by Hadley Freeman
- FromVogue contributor and Guardian columnist Hadley Freeman, a personalized guide to eighties movies that describes why they changed movie-making forever—featuring exclusive interviews with the producers, directors, writers and stars of the best cult classics. Tinseltown: Murder, Morphine, and Madness at the Dawn of Hollywood by William J. Mann
