It’s time for the Chinese New Year, and Lin Yi really wants a red rabbit lantern for the festival tonight. His mom gives him a list of food items to get at the marketplace for the celebration, telling him that if he can bargain well and has money left over, that he can buy a red rabbit lantern. Lin Yi rides his bike beneath a bridge that is known to give you luck and add an extra 5 minutes to your life, giving him even more reassurance that he will get his red rabbit lantern. Lin Yi is a responsible and endearing child whose example is often found hard for others to follow, or want to follow. This story is full of surprises, and the illustrations are breath-taking! And, at the end of the story, there are some extras—The Legend of the Moon Fairy, and an activity where children can make their own lantern!! I LOVE this book, and my students are still buzzing about it, and it’s been over a month ago that we read it!
