At 1:30 Wednesday morning, my dog woke me up so he could steal my pillow. Since I was awake, I looked at the election results. In sadness and fear, I switched over to my Kindle app and brought up the book I’ve been saving until after I finish 3 partially written reviews. Screw rewards, I needed an immediate escape.
The Hating Game was a wonderful life pod. Almost perfect. It’s major fault is that it has not permanently delivered me to a place where a man endorsed by white supremacists has not been elected president. I won’t remove a star from that though, because it is an unrealistic expectation. Apparently expecting white women to vote their own interests is also an unrealistic expectation. It’s probably all those romances we read where the white woman protagonist is rescued by the white male protagonist.
Other people have written far better reviews of The Hating Game than I could. So I’m going to say this, I am on my third re-read since picking it up just under 36 hours ago. It has been the balm my soul needs. The protagonists are delightful weirdos who don’t behave normally. I wish Penny Reid had read this book and been inspired by it before writing Beard Science.
Here is how I think the characters would have voted:
Lucy – Hillary
Josh – Hillary
Helene – Hillary
Little Fat Dick – Trump
Lucy’s parents – Possibly Hillary, maybe Jill Stein
Josh’s father – Trump
Josh’s mother – Hillary, but would not have kicked her husband out for voting for Trump. Might have even let her husband think she was voting for Trump.
The other, better reviews can be found here.
Special thanks to Mrs. Julien who made sure I had this available for soul soothing, and is all around awesome.
