Kate Karyus Quinn’s third book about weird stuff happening to and around teenagers is my favorite yet. She started with Another Little Piece, about an ancient spirit that bargains with teenage girls. They get their deepest desire, but at a very high cost. (Don’t You) Forget About Me was the story of a town so perfect that people live for centuries. If only there wasn’t the tiny problem of teenagers causing mischief, mayhem, dismemberment, and death.
Down with the Shine is about a girl named Lennie Cash. Her uncles brew moonshine, and their tradition is to have each customer take the first drink with them and make a wish. What Lennie doesn’t know is that all the wishes come true.
Lennie ends up taking moonshine to a party. She performs the traditional ceremony, and when dawn arrives, all hell breaks loose. Her uncles’ powers have passed to her, and all of her classmates’ wishes have come true. Now, the party won’t stop, there are teenagers who turned into cats or flying bat monsters, Lennie resurrected her murdered best friend, oh, and there’s a kid with literal balls of steel.
