Ahhhh, this book! Loved it, loved it. I picked it up after another Cannonballer reviewed it a couple months ago and the comment section was full of people gushing over it, and it did not disappoint.
The Rook is the story of a woman who wakes up one day alone, surrounded by dead bodies, with no memory of who she is or how she got there. As it happens, there’s a letter in her pocket, written by the previous inhabitant of her body (Myfanwy Thomas–pronounced like “Tiffany” with an M), explaining that Myfanwy worked for a super-secret government organization tasked with hiding supernatural occurrences from the public, that she knew she was going to be murdered and that someone else would be inhabiting her body, and that this new person (referred to as Myfanwy throughout the rest of the book) should be careful because whoever tried to kill the first Myfanwy would try to kill the new Myfanwy as well.
The rest of the book has Myfanwy dealing with her lost memory, trying to figure out who killed her, uncovering a conspiracy, and facing off against some pretty unusual and disgusting supernatural enemies. In addition, she discovers that she has a superpower of her own, and works on developing and perfecting it, far beyond what the previous Myfanwy did. The plot is pretty complicated and I can’t do it justice here. It’s exciting, it’s witty, it’s clever, it’s unique and new while at the same time being reminiscent of other “super secret government agency” stories. Myfanwy is a great character. I’m so excited to read the sequel!
