Hi, everyone! I hope you’re having a great start to the year. I’m so excited to be doing cannonball read again!
I just finished a book called Scarlet, which is the second book in the Lunar Chronicles. I’d like to thank Terri (ModernLove) for getting me the third book, Cress, for Christmas in the book swap. I can’t wait to start reading it!
The book continues the story about Cinder, a mechanic who is cyborg. In the previous book, Cinder, Cinder is invited to the ball by Emperor Kai.
Since this is in the future, there are these people who are called “Lunars” from the planet Luna (the Moon), and they have a cruel leader named Queen Levana who will be attending the ball. Levana is known for maybe having to do with the death of her niece, Princess Selene. However, there is no evidence Princess Selene is dead.
Kai figures out Cinder is cyborg there. Bad things start to happen soon after. When Cinder is running out of the ball, she loses her metal foot, and falls down the stairs.
SPOILER ALERT!
A few days later Cinder is trapped in jail. A doctor who helps cyborgs, Doctor Erland, comes to Cinder and gives her new cyborg parts. He also tells Cinder a shocking secret -she is Princess Selene.
In Scarlet, Cinder escapes jail with another fugitive named Thorne. I think Thorne has to be one of my favorite characters in the whole book. I like him because he is charming, funny, but he still gets things done at the end of the day. My mom and I think he is the Han Solo in the story.
A new character is introduced in Scarlet, and her name is Scarlet Benoit. Scarlet has red hair and always wears a red hoodie — just like Little Red Riding Hood? Her grandmother has gone missing, and she’s looking for all the help she can get. After she meets a mysterious man named Wolf, they set out to find her grandmother. Soon, they find out that her grandmother may have something to do with Princess Selene.
I like Scarlet, but I like Cinder better. I think Cinder is more feminist, and those are my favorite types of people. It seems to me like Scarlet is described as some pretty girl that needs help. I do have a lot of sympathy for Scarlet though, and I think she is brave to go find her grandmother.
I hate Wolf. I liked him at the beginning of the book, but after some terrible things are unveiled about him, I will never feel the same way I did for him anymore.
Overall, I think the book is great. I really enjoyed reading it, and even though it was super long, I couldn’t stop turning the pages.
Thanks for reading! ❤
