Last year, Malin sent me a bunch of books. Among those books were several Julie James books. They were fine, but there was an element to her FBI/US Attorney series that didn’t quite gel with me. A couple of weeks ago I was looking through the books Malin sent, trying to find something to strike my fancy, and there was It Happened One Wedding. I thought it would be a reasonably enjoyable, non-brain taxing couple hour read. And it was. Except that it was a very enjoyable and engaging read.
FBI agent Vaughn Roberts observes Sidney Sinclair having a terrible coffee date and tries to pick her up once she is alone. Sidney recognizes him as a man not ready for commitment and wants nothing to do with him. He isn’t used to being summed up and brushed off so quickly. As you would expect, they are then forced into close proximity with one another because their siblings are getting married to each other. Shenanigans ensue.
During the shenanigans, Vaughn and Sidney* get to know each other, and then like each other, and then admit they are attracted to each other and eventually they fall in love. Unlike the other FBI/US Attorney books, Sidney is in no unnecessary danger from which she must be rescued by Vaughn. It’s just two adults falling in love. There’s nothing groundbreaking about the plot, but Sidney and Vaughn are engaging characters with both banter and smolder. It feels like this is the book where Julie James trusted her characters enough to carry the plot.
*I just realized that this is an Alias shout-out.
