“I don’t want you getting hurt.” “Everybody gets hurt,” she said. “You know that.”

The Weight of Feathers by Anna-Marie McLemore

I really loved this book. It’s so magical and romantical! By all accounts I shouldn’t be into this. I’m a grown up, gosh darn it! I need to file taxes and run errands! Yet this book makes me want to declare my undying love, shout at the nonbelievers, “You wouldn’t understand! You’ve never been in love!”

It’s about two families of performers. The Palomas have a mermaid show and the Corbeaus perform as fairies on high tree branches. The families have a long-standing feud. Lace is the Paloma, and Cluck (Not his real name, yes I kept thinking it was Chuck) is the Corbeau. After a horrible accident, Cluck saves Lace’s life. She ends up with a scar in the shape of a feather, a sign of the Corbeaus. Her family kicks her out and she joins the Corbeaus as a makeup artist, hoping to earn Cluck’s forgiveness, get rid of the feather, and rejoin her family. The kids start to appreciate each other, even though Cluck doesn’t really know who she is. There are some steamy moments, but it’s all really sweet, maybe low PG-13 content.

I like books, but my eyes are bigger than my stomach. Disclaimer: I do not actually eat books.
