Ugh. Wow. Can I write a one word review on the latest in my Pennyroyal Green adventures? Between the Devil and Ian Eversea was definitely not her best effort. This puts all of her other mediocre ones into perspective.
But before I go into full rant a little background/plot first. This is obviously an Eversea story within the series, and this time it’s Ian (of What I Did for the Duke fame) and Titania, the previously mentioned Duke’s ward. And yes, she does have an absolutely awful name, which results in “tit” jokes. Exactly. Titania is in England to find a husband as she can not inherit her family’s money without it, and she’s staying with the Everseas. Ian is planning an around the world adventure, and knows to not get mixed up with anything involving the Duke still. “Hijinks” ensue.
I can’t believe I’m about to say this… but I long for the days of Violet Redmond. Titania is one of the worst heroines I have ever read in a romance. She was so flat and uninteresting that I couldn’t understand all of the men of Sussex swooning over her. Her one remotely interesting character trait, she’s only given one besides her appearance, is that she is lonely since the death of her brother and parents. Yes, grief does change one’s life view (a lot), but in general her character was so one dimensional it was painful. Her looks are all that is described to make her interesting for three quarters of the book. You finally, actually hear about her grief, but by then it’s too late. She’s permanently annoying and shallow, just as the rival describes her. I can’t even care about the rest of the story I was so put off by Titania.
So anyways this one was a total dud for me. I’ll still read the others (including her new ones), but I can’t believe this is the same author who wrote What I Did for a Duke. Night and day in character development. Very sad.
